Why do we ride?

Why do we ride?

You have all had the same question from your well-meaning friends and family.

Why do you ride a motorcycle?  It’s so dangerous.

Those who know, know.

The sensation of rolling down the highway, ripping a canyon in the open air with nothing more than a powerful engine and gasoline between you and the road is a feeling like no other.  It can be challenging to explain in a way that can be understood by those who have never experienced it.

The feeling of freedom.

Being able to feel the temperature change every few minutes.

The wind in your face.

The rumble of your pipes filling the air around you.

The sensation of leaning into turn after turn after turn after turn.

You become one with the machine.  You become ultra-aware of your surroundings. You become one with nature.

You are not simply rolling down the road strapped down by a seatbelt surrounded by doors, glass, and airbags.  There is a reason that us in the motorcycle world refer to cars as “cages.”

A cage locks you in.  It takes your freedom.  It withholds your ability to experience the outside world.  It makes your life dull, boring, and monotonous.

The minute you throw your leg over the bike, fire up the engine, and hit the road, you are free.  At least for the time that you are out riding.

Riding is the break most of us need from the world that ties us down to many responsibilities.

We have work.

We have families.

We have responsibilities.

We have commitments.

Despite all of that, for the time we are on our motorcycles, we are checked out of the normal, the mundane.  We are living the life that we feel we were meant to live.

There are those who “own motorcycles” and those who are “bikers.”  There is a difference.

The bikers get it.

You guys get it.

Ride hard.

Shiny side up.

Stay safe, but have fun.

Be free!
